H2H: NO GREY AREAS

One of the questions I get asked a lot is how I can dress fashionably and not compromise my beliefs. I think any one who craves a relationship with God and is stylish would have struggled with balancing these two interests at some point in their lives.

The question I ask myself is one from Galatians 1:10 that says "Am I trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God?" Put it in another way, "who will be more pleased by my actions, God or human beings?" If I gave into that sheer trend or wore a deep V or those backless dresses all the way to your ass crack or showed side boob or front boob or the latest under boob, who would it excite more, God or human beings? If I wore tiny skirts, or some of these crop tops that are pretty much bras, or these bikinis that only cover your labia, would it please God more than it pleases human beings?

There's the argument that God sees your hearts and is the only One that can rightly judge you. I totally agree. However, to non-Christians, you may be the only Bible they read and they cannot see your heart, so what are you saying to them by your appearance?

There's the argument that no one is perfect. Again, I totally agree. There are some outfits that I have worn that looking back I'm like 'I shouldn't have worn that'. And then I don't wear such again. For example, I had a provocative picture of me on the beach on social media and once I realised that picture pleases human beings, more than God, I took it down. I am talking about repeat offenders here. Women who do not learn and continue to dress indecently and then get comments referring to them as "sexy". The world or your social media followers referring to you as sexy is 9.5 out of 10 times not pleasing to God. The definition of sexy is not one that a Proverbs 31 woman should want to be associated with (except the comment is coming from her husband, and in that case, GO GIRL!!!)

Dressing in a way that is not modest is a way of seeking the validation of human beings over the validation of God. There are no grey areas here. You either want God's validation or you want the validation of human beings.

  2. I am so blessed by dis post. A woman can be fashionable n decent as well. I think everything has to be done in moderation. As Christians we r the light of the world n we ought to give them direction n point them to God in all dat we do (in character, speech, appearance). Not everything dat is in vogue that is acceptable. God bless u real good Tomilola..

  9. Thank you so much for this.
I will keep that verse in mind in determining what to wear.
I'm not the stylish type that loves to try different things, but some things I wore In the past(looking back now) that didn't reflect Christ.
I have to be more intentional about what I wear...

  11. The struggle within us to please God or man is the important thing. Most times, we feel a lil uneasy about those clothes, but we brush it off. I've learnt to analyze that unease and address it. No cloth is worth losing my peace of mind over

  13. Such a thought provoking post, and something I myself have thought about and discuss prior on my blog also. Glad more women are speaking out about being held out as ladies. I think the media has pissed all over that term and dates it to the point where exposing 80% body is 'normal' and the flip side is prudish *sigh*

  15. This is so interesting that there should even ever be a conflict between being stylish and loving God. I guess with every single thing that is a passion, we need to constantly examine if the passion conflicts with the ultimate passion for God. Good post!
